An independent guide to automatic watches and winders that reads the spec sheet for a living — and tells you plainly when a watch doesn't earn its price.
Why this site exists
Watches are sold on romance — heritage, adjectives, a photo of a mountain — and the spec that actually tells you what you’re buying is often buried or left out. Dial & Lumeexists to do the plain, honest version of that job: read the movement and case data, work out the turns-per-day and power-reserve maths, check the price you’d pay today, and say which watch (or winder) earns its place — and which to skip.
Our whole editorial stance fits in one sentence: we tell you what we know, how we know it, and where we don’t know.When a maker won’t state an accuracy figure or even name the movement, we print “Not published” rather than guessing. When a cheaper watch does the same job as a pricier one, we say so, even though the pricier one might pay us more. And we have never invented a review, a rating, or an “in our testing” claim — there are none anywhere on this site.
Who writes it
Dial & Lume is written by Stephen V.. Stephen is a watch enthusiast — genuinely into this stuff — who reads movement spec sheets and does the power-reserve and turns-per-day math for fun. He is not a watchmaker and runs no test lab: there is no drawer of loaner units here. What he does bring is a habit of checking the manufacturer's published specs against the price you'd actually pay today, and saying plainly when a watch (or a winder) isn't worth it.
That is a deliberate limit, and we’d rather be straight about it than borrow authority we haven’t earned. We don’t run a test lab or a watchmaking bench, so we don’t claim hands-on testing or lab results. What we do instead is spelled out in full on our methodology page: spec-by-spec comparison, every factual claim traced to the maker or a published standard, and verdicts that commission can’t buy.
