How we picked
Four criteria decided this list, applied in this order. They are the same four we would use on a single winder, except that the first one only exists once you have two watches in the same box.
1. Independent control per position
This is the whole argument for a double over two singles or one bigger box. Two automatics rarely want identical settings: one may be happy at 650 turns per day clockwise, the other may need bi-directional winding at a higher count. A winder that applies one mode to both slots forces a compromise on at least one of them. The Versa Elite and the Rothwell both state that each position is set separately; the budget picks below do not, and we’ve marked that as a trade-off rather than buried it.
2. A published turns-per-day number
“Five rotation modes” tells you nothing about whether your watch is getting 650 turns a day or 2,400. A winder that publishes its TPD ladder lets you match the setting to what the caliber actually asks for — and there is no ISO standard here, so the maker’s own figure is the only authority there is. 3. Motor noise, and how many motors
A winder cycles on and off around the clock, so a buzzy one becomes a 2 a.m. problem. Every pick here uses a motor its maker describes as quiet or ultra-quiet — that much is cheap and near-universal now. The less obvious question on a double is whether the two positions run off one shared drive or two separate motors. Rothwell states two; where a maker doesn’t say, assume one, because a shared drive is another reason both watches end up on the same schedule. 4. Power source and placement
Mains-only is fine on a dresser and useless in a safe. Battery or USB-C power is what lets a winder sit where there isn’t a socket — the Rothwell takes AA cells, the ANWBROAD takes AA or Type-C, and the two cheapest picks run from USB-C. It sounds like a footnote until you work out where the box is actually going to live.
Double winder, or two singles?
Two singles give you perfect independence by definition — separate boxes, separate settings, separate motors — and they let you move one watch to a different room. The catch is cost and clutter: two of the singles we rate cost more than most of the doubles on this page and take up more surface area. A double wins when the two watches live in the same place and you want one power cable instead of two.
Two singles win in one specific case: when one of your watches is genuinely valuable and the other isn’t. There is no reason to buy a $200 double so a $150 Seiko can share a case with a Rolex — put the Rolex on the winder it deserves from our single watch winder picks and let the Seiko sit in a box until you wear it. Nothing bad happens to a stopped automatic.
What you are actually paying for
The gap between the $29 pick and the $205 pick on this page is not winding competence. All six will turn a rotor and keep a mainspring topped up. What the money buys, in order: adjustable and published TPD, per-position control, a second motor, a case made of wood rather than moulded board, and a warranty from a company that answers email. That is a real list of differences — it just isn’t the list most product pages imply, which is why we rank on settings first and finish second.
If your budget is the binding constraint, the honest advice is to buy the cheapest pick here that has the settings your watches need, and spend the difference on the watches. Setting up a double winder
Wind each watch by hand 20 to 40 turns of the crown before you seat it. A winder maintains a running watch; it is slow at starting a fully unwound one, because it only turns for a few minutes at a time. Then set the direction first and the turn count second — a winder running the wrong way spins the rotor without winding anything, which is the single most common reason someone concludes their winder is faulty.
Seat both watches with the bracelet or strap snug on the pillow. A loose fit is what causes the case to shift and rub, and it is far more likely to mark a watch than the rotation itself is. Finally, if one of the two positions is empty, leave that side switched off where the winder allows it — there is nothing to gain from running an empty cuff.
