Two settings decide whether a winder actually keeps your watch running: turns per day (TPD)— how many full rotations it performs in 24 hours — and direction— clockwise, counter-clockwise, or both. Get the direction wrong and the winder can spin all day while the mainspring never winds. The good news: there’s a simple method that works even if you don’t know your exact caliber.

The one rule that beats any table: start low

Most automatics are happy somewhere around 650–950 TPD, and the majority of modern movements wind in both directions, so a bidirectional setting near the low end suits almost everything. Set that, wear the watch, then leave it on the winder for a day or two and check it. Still running and on time? You’re done. Lost time or stopped? Nudge the TPD up a step. That beats chasing a precise number, because winder makers’ recommendations vary and a healthy movement can’t be overwound.

These are common winder-maker starting points, not manufacturer specifications — use them as a first setting and adjust as above. Where a movement winds only one way, a “both directions” setting still works, just less efficiently, so add turns if a watch runs down.

Why direction matters

A rotor winds the mainspring only when it turns the way that engages the winding gears. Many movements use a reverser or a “Magic Lever” so they wind in bothdirections — those are easy, and a bidirectional program is ideal. A handful wind in only one direction (the Miyota 8215 and the classic Valjoux 7750 chronograph are the usual examples); on those, a bidirectional winder still works because it turns the correct way half the time, but you may need to raise the TPD to compensate. If you ever notice a watch losing time on the winder despite a sensible setting, direction is the first thing to change.

What TPD should I set my watch winder to?

For most modern automatics, start around 650–800 turns per day, bidirectional. If the watch loses time or runs down on the winder, step the TPD up. Starting low and increasing only if needed is safer and more reliable than guessing a high number.

Does rotation direction matter on a watch winder?

Yes. A movement winds when the rotor turns the correct way; set the wrong single direction and it spins without winding. Most modern movements wind in both directions, so a bidirectional setting is the safe default. Some, like the Miyota 8215 and the Valjoux 7750, wind only one way and need more turns or the correct direction.

Can too many turns per day damage my watch?

No — the winding mechanism slips once the mainspring is fully wound, so excess turns don't overwind a healthy movement. Very high TPD just runs the motor and the watch more than necessary. There's no benefit to setting more turns than the movement needs.

How do I know if the TPD is right?

Wear the watch, then set it aside on the winder and check it a day or two later. If it's still running and keeping time, the setting is fine. If it has stopped or lost noticeable time, increase the TPD a step, or switch to a bidirectional setting.
