How to Wind an Automatic Watch

The right way to start a stopped automatic, how many turns it actually takes, why you cannot overwind one, and the two mistakes that do genuine damage.

An automatic watch winds itself from the motion of your wrist. That works perfectly while you are wearing it and not at all while you are not — so the single most common question new owners have is what to do with a watch that has stopped on the dresser. The answer takes about twenty seconds, and almost everything people worry about while doing it is a myth.

The short version

Take the watch off. If the crown screws down, unscrew it. Turn the crown clockwise 20 to 40 times. Set the date, then the time. Screw the crown back down. Put it on.

Why you cannot overwind an automatic

This is the fear that stops people winding their watches properly, and it is misplaced. In a manual-wind watch the mainspring is anchored firmly to the inside of its barrel, so winding past full can strain or break it. In an automatic, the spring is deliberately attached by a slipping bridle — a curved end-piece that grips the barrel wall by friction rather than being fixed to it.

When the mainspring reaches full wind, its force becomes stronger than the bridle’s grip. The bridle pulls loose and slides around the barrel wall, and the spring simply cannot be wound further. This has to be true for an automatic to work at all: the rotor turns whenever you move, all day, long after the spring is full. The same mechanism is why a watch winder cannot overwind a watch either, which is the second most common worry in this category.

So wind confidently. You will feel the resistance change and the winding go slightly slack when you reach the top. Nothing is being strained.

Step by step

1. Take it off first

Wind the watch in your hand, not on your wrist. Winding on the wrist means turning the crown at an angle, which puts sideways force on the winding stem— the thin shaft running from the crown into the movement, and the single most commonly bent or snapped part in a watch. It is a small habit that prevents a real repair bill.

2. Unscrew the crown, if it screws down

Dive watches and most watches rated 100m or more have a screw-down crown that threads into the case for water resistance. Turn it counter-clockwise until it releases and springs out slightly. If the crown will not turn and you are pushing hard, stop — it is still screwed down, and forcing it is how threads get stripped.

3. Wind clockwise, 20 to 40 turns

With the crown in its resting position against the case, turn it clockwise. Twenty turns will start the watch and give it several hours; forty will get it close to a full reserve. Most modern automatics hold roughly 40 hours — Seiko states about 41 for the 4R36 and 4R34 families — so forty turns is a sensible default.

You will feel the movement engage and hear a faint ratcheting. Once the winding goes smooth and slack, the bridle is slipping and there is no point continuing.

4. Set the date first, then the time

The crown usually has two pulled positions: the first sets the date (and day, if there is one), the second sets the time. Do the date first, then the time, so you are not pulling the crown back and forth through the date position with the hands set.

If the movement hacks — the seconds hand stops when the crown is fully out — you can set it precisely against a phone clock. If it doesn’t, set the minute hand slightly ahead and let it catch up.

5. Push the crown home and screw it down

Press the crown back to its resting position. If it screws down, hold it gently against the case and turn clockwise until you feel it seat — snug, not tight. A crown left unscrewed is the most common reason a “water-resistant” watch takes on water, and you will not find out until it is too late.

The date-change danger zone

This is one of two things that genuinely damage watches, and almost nobody is told about it.

Between roughly 9pm and 3am, the date wheel is mechanically engaged and preparing to change over at midnight. Manually setting the date during that window forces gear teeth against each other while they are already under load, and it can chip or break them — a repair costing more than many of the watches on this site.

The safe method: before setting the date, move the hands to around 6 o’clock, well clear of the changeover. Set the date. Then set the time normally, running the hands forwards. If the hands pass midnight and the date flips, that is the watch doing it under its own power and is entirely safe — it is only manual date setting inside that window that causes harm.

The other real mistake: winding at an angle

Covered above but worth repeating, because it is the failure we see reported most. The winding stem is thin and it is the mechanical link between your fingers and the gear train. Wind it straight, in your hand, with the watch supported. Do not wind it one-handed while doing something else, and do not force a crown that is not turning freely.

What about a watch that will not start?

If you have wound it 40 turns and the seconds hand is not moving, the likely causes in order are: the crown is still in a pulled position (push it fully home); the movement does not hand-wind at all (older and cheaper automatics sometimes don’t — rock the watch gently for a minute instead); or the watch needs a service, which for a mechanical movement is typically due every five to seven years.

A watch that starts and then stops within a few hours is usually a service issue too — the mainspring is winding but the movement is not running efficiently enough to use it.

Do you need a winder to avoid all this?

Almost certainly not. Winding takes twenty seconds, and a watch you wear regularly never stops in the first place. Frequently asked questions

Can you overwind an automatic watch?

No. An automatic's mainspring is attached to the barrel wall by a slipping bridle rather than fixed to it. When the spring reaches full wind, its force exceeds the bridle's grip and the bridle simply slides — so further winding does nothing. That is a mechanical design feature, not a caution, and it is why neither your wrist nor a watch winder can overwind an automatic.

How many times should you wind an automatic watch?

20 to 40 turns of the crown is plenty to start a stopped watch and give it most of a full reserve. You cannot do harm by continuing, but you will feel the winding go slack and there is no benefit past that point. Then wear it — normal movement keeps the mainspring topped up.

Which way do you turn the crown to wind a watch?

Clockwise, away from you, with the crown in its resting position pushed against the case. On most movements only the clockwise direction winds; turning it the other way may feel loose or ratchet freely, which is normal and does no damage.

Do you have to hand-wind an automatic watch every day?

No. If you wear it daily, the rotor keeps it wound and you never need to touch the crown. Hand-winding matters when a watch has stopped after sitting unworn — an automatic runs about 40 hours off the wrist, so a watch put down on Friday is stopped by Sunday.

Can you shake an automatic watch to start it?

It works, in that it will start the watch running, and we would still hand-wind instead. Shaking spins the rotor hard against its bearings and puts a lot of energy into the winding train in a short burst. Hand-winding is gentler, faster and gives you far more reserve than shaking does.

What if my automatic watch has no hand-winding function?

Some older and cheaper automatics can't be wound at the crown at all — the crown only sets the time. On those, the correct method is gentle rocking: hold the watch flat and rock it side to side for 30 to 60 seconds until the seconds hand starts, then put it on. Hacking and hand-winding are both standard on Japanese in-house calibers today, but not universal below them.
