How a watch keeps time on your wrist with no battery — the rotor, mainspring, gear train and escapement, explained in plain English.

An automatic watch keeps time with no battery at all. Instead of electronics, it stores mechanical energy in a coiled spring and releases it in tiny, precisely regulated pulses. The clever part — the “automatic” bit — is that it winds that spring from the ordinary motion of your wrist, so as long as you wear it, it never stops. Here is the whole chain, from your wrist to the second hand.

The five parts that make it run

  1. The rotor— a weighted half-disc on the back of the movement that swings freely as your wrist moves. That’s the piece you can see spinning through an exhibition caseback.
  2. The mainspring— a coiled ribbon of spring steel in a barrel. The rotor’s motion winds it tighter; the wound spring is the watch’s entire energy store (its “power reserve”).
  3. The gear train— a series of toothed wheels that transmits the mainspring’s energy across the movement and, along the way, drives the hour, minute and second hands at their different speeds.
  4. The escapement— the gatekeeper. It releases the gear train’s energy one small, equal step at a time instead of letting the spring unwind all at once. That step-by-step release is what makes the whole thing a clock rather than a spring that just flies undone.
  5. The balance wheel and hairspring— a tiny wheel that swings back and forth at a fixed rate, regulated by a fine hairspring. It is the watch’s metronome: each swing lets the escapement advance one step, and its steady beat is what actually keeps time.

How energy flows, start to finish

Put simply: your wrist moves the rotor → the rotor winds the mainspring → the mainspring drives the gear train → the escapement doles that energy out in equal pulses → the balance wheel’s steady oscillation sets the rhythm of those pulses → the hands advance. Take the watch off and the rotor stops, but the mainspring keeps the watch running on its stored charge until the power reserve runs out.

Automatic, manual and “hacking”

An automatic (or self-winding) movement is a manual movement with a rotor added. Almost all modern automatics can also be hand-woundthrough the crown, which is handy for topping up a watch that’s been sitting. Many also hack— the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown out — so you can set the time to the second. On our spec tables we list both, because a movement that hand-winds and hacks (like Seiko’s 4R36) is genuinely more convenient to live with than one that does neither.

Why they aren’t perfectly accurate

A mechanical watch is a physical oscillator, so temperature, position and the state of wind all nudge its rate slightly. That’s why an affordable automatic is rated in tens of seconds per day— Seiko states its 4R36, for example, at roughly +45 to −35 seconds a day worn on the wrist. A watch that has passed the Swiss COSCchronometer test runs to a much tighter −4/+6 seconds a day, which is part of what you pay for as you move up in price. Neither is “wrong” — they’re different standards, and we call each what it is on every watch we compare.

Living with an automatic

In practice: wear it and it stays wound. Take it off for longer than its power reserve and it stops — no harm done; wind it and reset. Do automatic watches need a battery?

No. An automatic watch is purely mechanical — it stores energy in a wound spring rather than a battery. Wearing it winds it automatically from the motion of your wrist, and you can also wind it by hand on most modern movements.

Do automatic watches need winding if you wear them every day?

Usually not. Normal daily wear keeps an automatic wound through the rotor. If you take it off for a day or two beyond its power reserve — commonly around 40 hours — it stops, and you just wind it and reset the time, or keep it on a winder.

Do automatic watches tick?

The seconds hand sweeps rather than ticks once per second, because the balance wheel beats several times a second (a Seiko 4R36 runs at 21,600 beats per hour, or six per second). Up close you'll see a smooth sweep, not the single tick of a quartz watch.

How long does an automatic watch last?

A well-made automatic can last decades with periodic servicing — the movement is designed to be cleaned and re-oiled every several years. Left unworn and unwound, it simply stops until you wind it again; nothing is damaged by letting it run down.
