How We Pick
The honest version of a 'how we test' page: exactly what we do, what we don't, and how you can check our work.
Almost every “best watches” roundup implies a test lab. We don’t have one, and we won’t pretend to. Units we claim to have tested: zero.Sponsored placements: zero. Free units accepted: zero. Those are categories where zero is the honest number — and it’s why you can trust the rest of the page. Here, in full, is what we do instead. It’s reproducible: you could repeat it yourself.
1. We compare published specs, not marketing
For every watch, we read the manufacturer’s own data and record the things that decide whether it’s worth the money:
- Movement — the caliber, whether it’s made in-house, its stated accuracy and power reserve, and whether it hacks and hand-winds.
- Case and crystal — diameter, water resistance, and whether the crystal is scratch-prone mineral or sapphire.
- What’s missing — when a maker doesn’t publish an accuracy figure or won’t name the movement, we print “Not published” rather than guessing. What a brand hides is information too.
2. We do the math
Where a number is useful, we compute it rather than assert it: power-reserve against daily wear, and for winders the turns-per-day and direction a movement actually needs. We show that work on the pages where it matters — see our TPD settings guide and how automatic watches work.
3. We check the live price
Every price on the site comes from a daily automated retailer check and is stamped with the date it was pulled. If that check stops running, the number disappearsand the button falls back to “Check price on Amazon” — we would rather show you nothing than a stale figure. We never write a price into an article, so a price literally cannot go out of date in our copy.
4. We rank on buyer fit, and say when to skip
Our rankings are editorial judgments argued in plain words, not a fake numeric score. A higher price doesn’t win by default; where a cheaper watch is the better buy, it’s our pick, even when the pricier one would pay us more. And we’ll tell you when to skip a purchase entirely — including that most people don’t need a watch winder.
5. We cite our sources
Factual claims — accuracy standards, how a movement works, what “Diver’s 200m” legally requires — are cited to the issuing authority (the manufacturer, COSC, ISO) so you can verify them. Product images are the retailer’s, labeled as supplied; we never present a stock photo as a watch we own or tested.
What we don’t do
We don’t bench-test watches, run a timing machine on owned units, or accept products or payment for placement. We’re a curator that reads the specs carefully and checks the price honestly — and where that’s not enough to judge something, we say so instead of inventing a verdict. If you ever find a claim that doesn’t match its source, tell usand we’ll fix it.
