Automatic Watch Movements Explained

In-house, NH35, Miyota, Swiss — what the caliber name on a spec sheet actually tells you, what it doesn't, and why a missing movement name matters more than most buyers realize.

The movement is the engine of a watch: the assembly of springs, gears and levers that actually keeps time. Spec sheets refer to it by a caliber name — 4R36, NH35, SW200 — and those names carry a surprising amount of information if you know how to read them. They also, occasionally, tell you something by being absent.

The first question: in-house or bought-in?

This is the division that explains most of the affordable watch market.

An in-house movement is designed and built by the company whose name is on the dial. Among the brands we cover, Seiko, Orient and Citizen all do this — which is genuinely unusual at these prices, and it is why those three dominate our recommendations.

A bought-in movement is purchased from a specialist supplier and fitted into a watch someone else designed. Bulova, Timex, Fossil and Invicta all work this way. So do essentially all micro-brands.

In-house is not automatically better. A bought-in Seiko NH35 is more reliable and more serviceable than plenty of obscure in-house calibers. What in-house reliably brings is documentation and parts: a company that builds its own movements publishes their specifications and stocks their components for decades, because it has to. That is worth real money over a watch’s life, and it is what our brand guide is largely organized around.

The movements you will actually encounter

Seiko 4R35 / 4R36 — the reference

The caliber behind most Seiko 5 Sports watches, and the benchmark everything else at this price is measured against. Seiko publishes its specification openly: automatic with hand-winding, 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour, roughly 41 hours of power reserve, and an accuracy of -35 to +45 seconds a day worn on the wrist. The 4R36 adds a day display to the 4R35’s date.

That published accuracy range is rarer than it sounds. Almost no other maker at this price commits to a number, and being able to hold a watch to its own maker’s spec is genuinely useful — see our accuracy guide for what to do with it.

Seiko 4R34 — the affordable GMT

The same 4R platform with a GMT complication: a fourth hand completing one rotation every 24 hours, adjustable independently. Seiko states 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour and about 41 hours of reserve. This single caliber is the reason a mechanical GMT stopped being a luxury purchase, and it powers every Seiko on our GMT page.

Seiko NH35 — the micro-brand workhorse

The NH35 is the unbranded 4R35, sold by Seiko’s Time Module division to other manufacturers. Mechanically it is the same design: automatic, hand-winding, hacking. If a $130 micro-brand watch says “NH35” on the listing, you are getting a movement that any watchmaker in the world can service or swap for a modest sum.

That is the single strongest argument for buying a micro-brand watch. The brand may not exist in ten years; the movement will still be repairable, which removes most of the risk from the purchase.

Miyota (Citizen) — the other Japanese workhorse

Miyota is Citizen’s movement division and supplies a great many watches at this price, including Bulova and Fossil models. The 8215 and 9015 families are common. They are dependable and cheap; the 8215 in particular is known for a rotor that spins audibly, which some owners find charming and others do not.

Swiss: ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200

The workhorses of the Swiss industry, and near-interchangeable. They run at 28,800 vibrations per hour — a higher beat rate than the Japanese calibers, giving a smoother-looking seconds sweep — and are generally better finished. They also cost several times as much, which is why they appear at $700 rather than $200. Good movements; not four times better.

“Japanese automatic” — the non-answer

When a listing says only “Japanese automatic movement” with no caliber name, treat it as an unnamed movement. It may well be a Miyota or a Seiko clone; you have no way to know, no published accuracy figure, no jewel count, and no reserve figure. That is normal below about $120 and it is the main practical limitation of our under-$100 picks.

Reading a spec sheet

Jewels

Synthetic ruby bearings at the highest-wear pivot points, which reduce friction and wear. 21 to 24 is normal for a three-hand automatic and is entirely sufficient. A higher count does not mean a better movement — it usually means more complications, or jewels fitted where they do nothing. Treat a “41 jewels!” headline as marketing.

Vibrations per hour (vph), or beat rate

How many times the balance wheel swings per hour. 21,600 vph (six beats per second) is standard for Japanese calibers; 28,800 vph (eight per second) for most Swiss ones. A higher rate gives a visibly smoother seconds sweep and, in theory, slightly better resistance to positional error — at the cost of more wear and more power. It is not a quality ranking.

Power reserve

How long the watch runs fully wound and unworn. Around 40 hours is the norm — Seiko states about 41 for the 4R family. Longer reserves (Swiss movements offering 70 or 80 hours) are a genuine convenience: a watch you take off Friday evening is still running on Monday morning.

Hacking and hand-winding

Hacking: the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled, letting you set the watch to the second. Hand-winding: you can wind the mainspring at the crown rather than shaking the watch awake — see our guide to winding an automatic. Both are standard on Japanese in-house calibers and the NH35, and frequently absent on cheaper unnamed movements. Both make a watch materially nicer to live with.

What a missing movement name actually costs you

Several brands we cover — Timex and Fossil most notably — publish nothing about their automatic calibers. This is not dishonest. They are selling design and brand, and a generic caliber name would add nothing to that pitch. But it has three consequences worth weighing.

No benchmark. You cannot tell whether the watch is performing as intended, because there is no stated intention.

No comparison. You cannot line it up against a 4R36 on jewels, beat rate or reserve, because those figures do not exist publicly.

Harder servicing. A watchmaker asked to work on an undisclosed movement is working without a data sheet and without a guaranteed parts supply.

The practical summary

Under $120: expect an unnamed movement. Buy on the watch, not the spec.

$120–$250: look for an NH35. A named, universally serviceable movement at this price is the best value in watches — our under-$200 page is built around it.

$180–$500: Seiko’s 4R family or Orient’s and Citizen’s in-house calibers. Documented, supported, and made by the company on the dial.

$700 and up: Swiss ETA and Sellita movements, longer power reserves, and finishing you can see through a display back.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'in-house movement' mean?

That the company whose name is on the dial designed and built the movement inside it. Seiko, Orient and Citizen all do this at affordable prices; Bulova, Timex, Fossil and Invicta buy movements in and design the watch around them. In-house usually means published specifications and a long parts supply, which matters more than raw performance.

What is a Seiko NH35 movement?

The unbranded version of Seiko's 4R35, sold by Seiko's Time Module division to other manufacturers. Japanese movements from Seiko, Miyota and Orient are reliable, well-documented and much cheaper. At the same price the Japanese option is usually the better watch; at higher prices the Swiss finishing starts to justify itself.

Does the jewel count matter?

Not in the way the marketing implies. Jewels are synthetic ruby bearings that reduce friction at the highest-wear pivots. Around 21 to 24 is normal and sufficient for a three-hand automatic. A higher count doesn't mean a better movement — it usually means more complications, or jewels added in places that don't do anything useful.

What does 'hacking' mean on a movement?

That the seconds hand stops when you pull the crown out to set the time, so you can synchronize the watch to the second. Non-hacking movements keep running while you set them, so you can only set the minute approximately. Hacking is standard on Japanese in-house calibers today and often absent on cheaper unnamed movements.

Why won't some brands say what movement they use?

Usually because the movement isn't the selling point — Fossil, Timex and Invicta sell design, heritage or price, and a generic caliber name adds nothing to that pitch. It's not dishonest, but it does have consequences: no accuracy benchmark, no jewel or reserve figures to compare, and a watchmaker working without a data sheet if it ever needs repair.
