Watch Water Resistance Explained
30m does not mean 30 meters. What the depth markings actually permit, what an ISO 6425 DIVER'S mark adds, and the one habit that ruins more watches than swimming ever has.

The depth marking on a watch is the most systematically misunderstood specification in the entire category, and the confusion is not the buyer’s fault. A number followed by “m” looks like a depth. It is not a depth. It is the result of a static pressure test— a stationary watch held at a fixed pressure in a laboratory — expressed in the equivalent depth of water.
Real water is not static. Moving your arm through it generates pressure spikes well above the static equivalent, and diving into a pool can momentarily exceed the marking on the dial by a wide margin. That is why a 30m watch cannot go swimming even though a pool is two meters deep.
What each marking actually permits
No marking at all
Keep it dry. A watch with no stated water resistance has no tested seals, and rain is enough. This is common on vintage watches and on some dress pieces.
30m / 3 bar / 3 ATM
Splash resistance. Rain, handwashing, an accidental drink spill. Not swimming, not showering, not washing up with your hands submerged. This is the most common rating on dress watches — most of the dress automatics we cover sit here, and it is a real limitation rather than a technicality.
50m / 5 bar / 5 ATM
Showering and shallow swimming, at the more generous end of published interpretations. In practice we would still keep a 50m watch out of a hot shower, for reasons covered below. Seiko’s Presage line is rated 50m, which is worth knowing before you buy one expecting a swimming watch.
100m / 10 bar / 10 ATM
Swimming and surface water sports. This is the practical threshold at which a watch stops needing to be thought about around water. Snorkeling is fine. Scuba is not — that needs the certification described below.
200m / 20 bar and above
Everything short of professional saturation diving, assuming the seals are in good condition. Most watches at this rating also have a screw-down crown, which is where much of the real resistance comes from.
The ISO standards, and why they matter
ISO 22810: ordinary water-resistant watches
This is the standard behind the everyday markings. It sets out test methods and permitted markings for watches intended for daily use and swimming rather than diving. It is a meaningful standard, and it is what a “100m water resistant” marking should rest on.
ISO 6425: divers’ watches
A considerably higher bar, and the standard a watch must meet to be legally marked “DIVER’S”. It requires a minimum 100m rating, a unidirectional or lockable elapsed-time bezel, legibility in darkness, resistance to magnetism and shock, and — the part that changes everything — testing of every individual watch rather than a production sample.
This is the single most useful distinction on this page. A watch stating “200m water resistant” is making a design claim about a sample. A watch marked “DIVER’S 200m” has itself been tested. Most affordable dive-styled watches, including nearly all of the NH35 micro-brand divers, do the first and not the second.
For swimming, snorkeling and everyday water, the difference is irrelevant. For actual scuba diving, it is the whole point of the category.
The crown: where watches actually flood
Now the practical part, and the reason this page exists. In our reading of how watches actually fail, the overwhelming cause of water damage is not exceeding a depth rating. It is a crown that was not pushed in or screwed down.
A screw-down crown provides much of a dive watch’s resistance. Left unscrewed after setting the time, a 200m watch is effectively an open case with a hole in the side. The owner then goes swimming with complete confidence, because the dial says 200m.
The habit worth building: after setting a watch, screw the crown down and give it a gentle push to confirm it is seated. Our guide to setting an automatic watch makes this the final step for exactly that reason.
The same applies to chronograph pushers. Never operate them underwater unless the watch specifically states that it is safe — pushers are the weakest point in almost any case seal, and pressing one while submerged is the most reliable way to flood a mechanical chronograph.
Heat: worse than depth
The counter-intuitive one. A hot shower or a sauna is harder on a watch’s seals than a swim, and it is where a great many otherwise careful owners lose a watch.
Two mechanisms are at work. Heat expands the case metal and the rubber gaskets at different rates, opening microscopic gaps that do not exist at ambient temperature. And steam is water vapor — individual molecules, far smaller than a droplet, able to pass through gaps that liquid water would bridge over.
Soap and shampoo make it worse still, by degrading the gasket rubber over time and by reducing surface tension so water penetrates more readily. The simple rule: take the watch off before a hot shower, whatever the dial says.
Gaskets, and the rating you actually have
A water resistance rating describes a watch when its seals are new. Gaskets are rubber: they harden, shrink and lose compression over years, and a fifteen-year-old watch with original gaskets does not have its stated rating regardless of what is printed on the caseback.
Gaskets are cheap and are replaced as a matter of course during a service. If water resistance matters to you, ask for a pressure test as part of any work — our service guide covers what a proper overhaul should include. If water does get in
Condensation under the crystal is the visible symptom, and it means moisture is already inside the case with the movement. Steel parts begin corroding quickly.
Act fast rather than waiting to see whether it clears. Get the watch to a watchmaker the same day if you can — the movement needs to be opened, dried and, in most cases, serviced. The rice-in-a-bag folk remedy does nothing useful for a watch and delays the only action that helps. Frequently asked questions
Can you swim with a 30m water resistant watch?
No. A 30m rating covers splashes, rain and handwashing only — it is not a depth you can take the watch to. The rating comes from a static pressure test, and real swimming involves dynamic pressure from arm movement that far exceeds the static equivalent of the marking.
What does 100m water resistance actually allow?
Swimming and water sports at the surface. 100m is generally considered the point at which a watch is safe for real swimming rather than incidental contact. It is still not a diving rating — that requires the ISO 6425 DIVER'S marking, which involves testing every individual watch.
Why can't you swim with a 30m watch if 30 meters is deeper than a pool?
Because the number is not a depth. It is a static pressure test performed on a stationary watch in a laboratory, expressed in the equivalent depth of water. Moving your arm through water generates dynamic pressure spikes far above the static figure, so the effective safe depth is much shallower.
What does an ISO 6425 DIVER'S marking mean?
