Lume is the luminous material painted onto a watch’s hands and hour markers so you can read it in the dark. It is one of the few watch features that is genuinely functional rather than decorative, and it is also one of the most misunderstood — people expect it to glow all night, are disappointed when it does not, and charge it in a way that guarantees the disappointment.
The short answer to the common complaint: your lume is probably fine, and you are almost certainly under-charging it. Here is how it works and what to expect.
How modern lume works
Modern watch lume is a photoluminescent pigment. Super-LumiNova, the best-known brand, is a strontium-aluminate pigment activated with europium and dysprosium, manufactured by RC Tritec in Switzerland — a company that set up a joint venture with Japan’s Nemoto & Co. in 1998 specifically to make it.
Its maker describes it as a rechargeable light battery, and that is a fair description of the mechanism. Light hitting the pigment excites electrons; when the light source is removed those electrons release the stored energy as visible light over the following minutes and hours. The cycle repeats indefinitely without the material degrading chemically.
It is not radioactive
This matters because the history is genuinely alarming. Early luminous watches used radium, which is radioactive and which poisoned the women who painted it onto dials. Later watches used tritium paint, far less dangerous but still radioactive and still self-luminous rather than charged.
Photoluminescent pigments replaced both, and both major brands say so explicitly: Super-LumiNova is described by its maker as non-radioactive and non-toxic, and Seiko states that LumiBrite is completely free of radioactive material. If you own a modern watch, its lume needs light and cannot glow without it — which is the trade-off for it being safe.
The one modern exception is tritium gas tubes, small sealed glass vials of tritium gas fitted to some tool watches. They glow continuously for years without charging and are a different technology entirely, not a paint.
The brands: Super-LumiNova, LumiBrite, and the unnamed stuff
Super-LumiNova
The Swiss standard, and the one specified by most brands that specify anything. It is sold in grades, and the grade matters: the higher grades — A and X1 — decay substantially more slowly than the standard grade, which is what makes an X1-marked watch readable across a whole night rather than a few hours.
Color is a separate axis. The greenish and blue-green compounds are the brightest; blue, white and the vintage-look cream tones are progressively dimmer for the same grade. A watch with warm cream lume has traded output for appearance, and that is a legitimate choice as long as you know you made it — our vintage-style roundup covers where that look belongs.
Seiko’s LumiBrite
Seiko’s own equivalent, and unusually for this industry Seiko publishes a figure you can hold it to: exposed to more than 500 lux for about 10 minutes, LumiBrite emits light for about 3 to 5 hours in the dark. That is a genuinely useful number, and it sets a realistic expectation for almost any modern watch, not just a Seiko.
Unnamed lume
Most budget watches simply say “luminous” and name nothing. Sometimes that is Super-LumiNova the brand did not license the right to name; frequently it is a cheaper strontium-aluminate compound with less pigment in the binder. The tell is not initial brightness — it is how fast the glow disappears, which you cannot judge from a listing photograph taken thirty seconds after a flash.
Why your lume “dies” by 3am
Two reasons, and neither is a fault.
The first is how the decay curve works. Luminous pigment does not fade linearly. It is intensely bright for the first minutes, drops sharply, and then decays very slowly at a low level for hours. So the watch is not going from bright to dead — it is going from bright to dim quickly and then staying dim for a long time. In a genuinely dark room your eyes adapt and it remains readable; in a room with any ambient light it does not.
The second is charging, and this is the one people get wrong. Sitting in ordinary room lighting all evening does not saturate the pigment. Seiko’s own figure is more than 500 lux for ten minutes — brighter than most domestic lighting. Thirty seconds under a desk lamp or a phone flashlight held close will do more than four hours of sitting on a sofa.
Where lume is actually specified
In most watch categories lume is an afterthought. In one it is a legal requirement.
The ISO 6425 standard, which a watch must meet to be legally marked “DIVER’S,” requires legibility in darkness at 25 centimeters — along with a minimum 100m rating, a unidirectional or lockable elapsed-time bezel, magnetic and shock resistance, and testing of every individual watch rather than a production sample. That is why dive watches have the lume they do: not enthusiasm, but a specification somebody has to pass.
The practical upshot for a buyer is that if lume genuinely matters to you, shop dive watches even if you never go near water. Three below where the lume is part of what the watch is for. Looking after it
There is nothing to maintain. The pigment’s afterglow properties are retained essentially indefinitely, and charging and discharging it does not wear it out. What ages over decades is the binder holding the pigment to the metal, which can yellow or lift — the origin of the “patina” collectors pay extra for on genuinely old watches, and the thing modern makers imitate with tinted compound.
Two things do harm lume in practice. Prolonged intense UV can degrade the binder and some dial finishes over years, so a watch stored in direct sunlight is not being looked after — our guide to storing automatic watches covers that. Give it strong light for a short time rather than weak light for a long time. Ten to thirty seconds under a bright lamp, a phone flashlight held close, or direct sunlight will fully saturate the pigment. Ambient room light charges it slowly and incompletely, which is why a watch worn indoors all evening glows weakly.
