How Long Do Automatic Watches Last?

Decades, with servicing — and a straight answer on which parts actually wear, what kills a cheap automatic, and the point at which repairing one stops making sense.

The honest answer is that an automatic watch does not have a lifespan in the way a phone or a car does. It has a maintenance schedule. Every part in a mechanical movement can be replaced, and watchmakers routinely restore movements built before either of us was born to full working order. Age is not what ends a watch’s life.

What ends it is a decision: at some point, someone decides the repair costs more than the watch is worth. That is the whole story, and everything below is a way of understanding when that moment arrives and how to push it further away.

What actually wears out

Lubricants, first and always

This is the real clock on a mechanical watch. A movement contains tiny quantities of oil and grease at specific points — the mainspring barrel, the pivots, the escapement. Over years those lubricants oxidize, migrate away from where they were placed, and thicken.

The consequence is not sudden failure but rising friction. The watch runs a little slow, the power reserve shortens, the amplitude of the balance drops. Left long enough, dry metal starts wearing against dry metal, and what was an oil change becomes a parts replacement. That is why servicing is preventive rather than reactive.

Pivots and jewel bearings

The wheels in a movement turn on fine steel pivots running in synthetic ruby jewels. The jewels exist precisely because ruby is hard and smooth and wears slowly. With adequate lubrication, this arrangement lasts a very long time. Without it, the pivots wear ovals into the jewel holes and the wheel no longer runs true.

The mainspring

Mainsprings do eventually lose their set and deliver less power, and they can break. It is a routine replacement part and not an expensive one. On an automatic there is also the slipping bridle — the component that makes overwinding impossible — which can wear and start slipping too early, shortening the reserve.

Gaskets

The rubber seals at the crown, caseback and crystal harden and shrink over years. They are cheap and replaced at every service. They are also the component whose failure does the most damage, which brings us to the real killer.

What actually kills watches

1. Water

Not wear. Water. A crown left unscrewed after setting the time, a perished gasket, a caseback opened for a battery in a watch that did not need one and then badly resealed — any of these lets moisture into a movement, and moisture corrodes steel parts in a way that decades of dry running never will.

2. Economics

The other killer, and the one that ends most affordable automatics. When a Seiko NH35 watch needs a service, a complete replacement movement often costs less than the labor of servicing the one in it. So the movement gets swapped, or the watch gets replaced entirely, and the original mechanism is thrown away in perfect repairable condition.

That is not a criticism of cheap watches. It is what makes them cheap. But it means the honest answer to “how long will my $150 automatic last?” is: mechanically, a very long time; economically, until it needs its first real service.

3. Impact

A hard knock can shear a balance staff or displace parts. Shock protection systems have been standard for decades and handle ordinary life well. What they do not handle is the watch hitting a tiled floor from waist height.

The magnet question, and the humidity question

Neither shortens a watch’s life, but both are worth knowing. Magnetism changes the rate rather than causing damage — a magnetized hairspring sticks to itself and the watch runs fast — and it is reversible in seconds with a demagnetizer. Does a winder shorten a watch’s life?

The most common version of this question, and the answer is nuanced enough to be worth stating carefully.

A winder cannot overwind a watch — the slipping bridle makes that mechanically impossible. What a winder does do is keep a movement running when it would otherwise be at rest, and a running movement consumes lubricant life while a stopped one does not. Over many years, a watch that lived on a winder has accumulated more running hours than one that sat in a box between wears.

Whether that is a meaningful difference is genuinely debated among watchmakers, and we are not going to pretend to a settled answer. What we would say is that the effect is small relative to the servicing interval, and that a watch which is never run at all has its own problem — oils congeal when nothing moves. Making one last

Practical, in rough order of impact:

  • Screw the crown down. Every time. Water is the killer, and an unscrewed crown is the commonest way it gets in.
  • Have the gaskets tested when you service it, and after any impact or caseback opening.
  • Service it when performance drops, rather than waiting for a failure. Rising friction is cheap to fix; metal-on-metal wear is not.
  • Store it dry. A box with a soft lining and a silica-gel pack, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it away from strong magnets, or accept that you will need it demagnetized occasionally.
  • Do not open the caseback yourself. Reseating a gasket correctly is a skill, and a badly closed case is an open case.

The buying implication

If longevity is genuinely part of why you want a mechanical watch, it argues for buying from a manufacturer with a service network and parts availability rather than for buying the best specification. A brand that services its own watches — Seiko, Orient, Citizen, the Swiss houses — will still be able to repair it in fifteen years. A micro-brand may not exist by then, though a documented movement like the NH35 mitigates that substantially.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an automatic watch last?

Indefinitely, if it is serviced. A mechanical watch has no component that cannot be replaced, so lifespan is a maintenance question rather than an age one — hundred-year-old movements run perfectly today. What limits a cheap automatic is not wear but economics: at some point a service costs more than the watch.

Do automatic watches wear out?

Individual parts do. Lubricants degrade over years, pivots and jewel bearings wear where metal meets metal, and mainsprings eventually lose their set. Does wearing an automatic watch every day wear it out faster?
