Automatic vs Quartz Watches
Quartz keeps better time, costs less and needs almost nothing from you. Automatics win on everything that isn't measurable — here is the honest comparison, including where a smartwatch fits.

This comparison is usually presented as a matter of taste, which lets both sides avoid the uncomfortable part. So let us start there: quartz is better at telling the time, and it is not close. A cheap quartz watch keeps time to within about fifteen seconds a month. Seiko states -35 to +45 seconds a day for its 4R36 automatic. Even a COSC-certified chronometer, the top of mechanical accuracy, averages -4 to +6 seconds a day — which a $20 quartz beats comfortably.
Quartz is also cheaper to make, cheaper to own, and needs almost nothing from you. If the only question is “which technology tells the time better,” the answer is settled and has been since about 1970.
That is not, however, the only question — and the rest of this page is about what the other questions are.
How each one works
Automatic
A wound mainspring drives a train of gears, regulated by an escapement and a balance wheel that oscillates back and forth several times a second. A weighted rotor spins as you move your wrist and rewinds the mainspring as you go. No battery, no electronics — the whole thing is stored energy released at a controlled rate. Quartz
A battery passes current through a tiny quartz crystal cut to vibrate at 32,768 times per second. A circuit counts those vibrations and pulses a stepper motor once per second, which moves the hands. That frequency is enormously higher and far more stable than a balance wheel’s, and it is why the accuracy gap is what it is.
The comparison that matters
Accuracy: quartz, decisively
Covered above. Worth adding that a mechanical watch’s rate also varies with position, temperature and how wound it is, so it drifts differently on different days. Quartz drifts consistently and predictably. Purchase price: quartz, at the bottom; closer higher up
Under $100, quartz gives you dramatically more watch — better materials, better finishing, better everything — because the movement costs a fraction as much. Above about $300 the gap narrows, because you are increasingly paying for case, dial and finishing rather than for the engine.
Running cost: quartz, comfortably
A battery every two to five years costs very little. A mechanical service every five to seven years can cost more than an entry-level automatic is worth — which is the single most under-discussed fact about mechanical watch ownership, and the reason cheap automatics are best understood as consumables rather than heirlooms.
Lifespan: automatic, if you service it
This is the one clear practical win for mechanical. Every part of a mechanical movement can be cleaned, adjusted or replaced, which is why hundred-year-old watches still run. A quartz movement is a sealed electronic module that is usually swapped rather than repaired, and once a specific module is discontinued the watch may be unfixable. The caveat is enormous: this only holds if the watch is actually serviced, and most cheap automatics never are.
Convenience: quartz, obviously
A quartz watch left in a drawer for a year is still telling the right time when you pick it up. Everything else: automatic
The sweep of the seconds hand. The rotor visible through a display back. The fact that it runs on your own movement. The knowledge that somebody assembled several hundred parts. None of that is measurable and all of it is why the category exists at all. People who buy mechanical watches know quartz is more accurate; that has never been the point.
The historical context
The gap is not a matter of opinion, and the industry proved it the hard way. When accurate quartz watches arrived at consumer prices around 1970, the Swiss mechanical industry very nearly did not survive. Between 1970 and 1983 the number of Swiss watchmaking firms fell from roughly 1,600 to about 600, and employment collapsed from 90,000 to 28,000 between 1970 and 1988. Japanese and American makers, who adopted the technology early, took the market.
What is interesting is what happened next. Mechanical watches came back, not as timekeeping instruments but as objects — and that is what they have been ever since. A modern automatic is not competing with your phone on accuracy. It is competing with a nice pen, a good jacket or a fountain pen on the question of whether you want a well-made mechanical thing in your life.
Where smartwatches fit
Worth addressing because it is the real cross-shop for a lot of buyers now. A smartwatch is not a competitor to either technology; it is a computer that also displays the time.
It wins on function comprehensively — notifications, fitness tracking, payments, navigation. It loses on everything to do with permanence: it needs charging every day or two, its software is unsupported within about five years, it has effectively no resale value, and nobody is inheriting one. A mechanical watch is bought for the opposite set of reasons.
In practice a great many people own both and wear them for different things — the smartwatch for exercise and travel, the mechanical watch for everything else. That is not a compromise; it is just recognizing that they are not the same product.
So which should you buy?
Buy quartz if you want a watch that is always right, always running, and cheap to keep — or if this is a watch you will wear occasionally and want to be correct when you pick it up.
Buy automatic if you want the object as much as the function: the mechanism, the sweep, the sense that it is a made thing. Accept that it will drift, and that it will need servicing eventually. Our entry-level picks are where to start.
Buy both, honestly. This is the answer for most people who end up interested in watches: a cheap accurate quartz for the gym and the beach, and a mechanical watch for the rest of the time. Neither has to justify the other.
One thing worth resisting: buying an automatic because you think it is “better” in some absolute sense. It isn’t, and going in with that expectation is how people end up disappointed when their new watch is a minute out after four days. Going in knowing exactly what it is — a mechanical object that approximately tells the time and is lovely — is how people end up keeping them.
